Fifth.
Agree with most of that.
I was screaming at Antonio to stay up and not keep falling over, the ref was wise to this and correctly gave him nothing.
I disagree thought that Antonio doesn't know where he is going with the ball, his goal against Gent is one example.
I feel Zouma and Aguerd were to deep. But In the 2nd half both bombed forward on a couple of occasions. Aguerd especially showed his skill. We do miss Dawson at set pieces.
Ogbonna was he suspended or was that earlier ?

By the way I do recall I got the score right.
Pity I didn't put a bet on it

Antonio’s display last night was ludicrous.

He probably was fouled a couple of times when challenging for the ball.

But by the time you throw yourself over under minimal contact for the fifth time to the same ref and expect a different result you are either dumb or a cheat.

Ings contributed far more when he came on and deserves to start next week.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v AZ Alkmaar - Official Match Thread
Antonio gets manhandled and fouled all the time, and very little protection from refs so i have a lot of sympathy for him. Don;t know if his physical stature puts him at a disadvantage in the eyes of officials.

But he needs to be cleverer and learn how to sell it much more convincingly. I don;t like it but you see forwards for other sides winning free kick after free kick because they've learned to make it look convincing to referees.

However, with Sunday off and some time to recharge, I think he can have their centre backs on toast next week. With some better through balls from Paqueta et all, he could really do some damage.

We could have scored four or five last night, which would have placed a different hue on what was in reality, a sub par execution of a sub par strategy

Yes, key players were shot and the ref appalling but the decision making with the final ball woeful. Small margins and all that and it looked for an hour that we would never score

Once we did, we started to play and there were some lovely touches. Having finally got them on the ropes in the last 10, Moyes retreated to Moyes - his subs were once again diabolical and 'respect the point' mode, which this 'win' felt like

Good night out mind and fair play to Benny who was absolute stand out on the pitch and after as he left the ground

Antonio turned into Emile Heskey last night - spent most of the night on his arse and throwing himself around - needs acting lessons.

Aguerd really liking this guy.
Benny the most frustrating player

And only in UEFA playing the final in a stadium with a capacity of 19000. Only UEFA could do that for a European final. 5000 for each club- Football for teh people right - cunts

Very frustrating first half, where was the energy and drive we showed against Man Utd 96 hours earlier but in the end i would have taken 2-1 at 8pm.

As for Benny, as well as he played he still infuriates at times. So many times he beats his man but instead off crossing or laying the ball off, he'll try to beat the same man again. Like i said, fucking maddening.

Frustrating first half. Seeing us sit back allowing an average side to dominate possession.

Much better second half. Looked more intense and played to win.

If we don't go there and turn them over Moyes needs stringing up.

In the end a good result but how frustrating to watch us sit back at home to an average side conceding possession. First half we showed little to no intensity whatsoever.

Looked like we were playing a friendly.

We have the players to win this competition but I’m not sure we have the manager to.

In the World Cup it would have been 10 minutes of extra time

Fifth - I didn't say it was but everything he did seemed like he was making it up as he went along.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v AZ Alkmaar - Official Match Thread
It seemed to me that at times in the first half Rice went against the game plan in the first half and led the press pointing at others to simultaneously press. Given the post match interview clearly showed they were aware the oppo would sit and they were wary of pressing too much.

I didn't have as much issue with this as everyone else on here. I was much more annoyed at the fact that we still have no plan for how to score a goal in open play. And numerous times when we did manage to nick the ball we'd either make appalling decisions on the ball (often player simply didn't scan so didn't know there was a better option for a pass than the one they chose) or made the right decisions and made awful passes/terrible crosses.

I'm a big fan of Paqueta but I thought he was embarrassing at times last night - the quality of his final pass was dire. Antonio toe poking the winner doesn't make up for the fact he has no idea where to run or what to do when he's running with the ball.

I'm glad we won but the opposition were absolute dog shit in my opinion in terms of open play. They created nothing except a shot from distance that arose from a foul. failure by Soucek to close down the shooter, a lucky bounce in front of Areola and Areola poor judgement of the flight of the ball.

On the plus side I thought our back four were largely excellent which I suppose helped AZ look poor going forwards.

Fraser - that approach is not within the rules, you can't adjust times based on who is winning or losing. In the first half they had a couple of people "down" for ridiculous play acting plus the goal and there were only 2 mins of stoppages there. Just another thing showing the ref was awful

El Scorchio 11:32 Fri May 12
Re: ⚽ West Ham v AZ Alkmaar - Official Match Thread
If Moyes doesn’t rest every single one of them at the weekend he needs shooting. All the eggs have to go in this basket now. Brentford aren’t playing for anything so we can’t even be accused of damaging anyone else’s season if we play reserves.

I’d have felt a lot better with a two goal lead but a win is a win and I’ll be delighted with a shithouse 0-0. Personally I thought Genk were better than this lot. No threat at all and got so lucky with a howler from Areola, and had 12 players on the pitch basically.

Well capable of finishing this off with rested players and the right attitude, but I’ve seen us crash this bus before too many times and it wouldn’t surprise me if we have to sit through penalties or something.

As Moyes pointed out we were wasteful in very good positions, Paqueta twice in the first 30 mins. We really do struggle to be clinical.

I fancy us over there.

AZ came for a draw. They were time wasting from the first minute.

I fancy another 2-1 or 2-0 to us second leg

Supposed to be 30 seconds a goal as well I thought.. Not to mention how long it took to take the penalty..

Re: ⚽ West Ham v AZ Alkmaar - Official Match Thread
Pedro - Because we were winning and they needed to score. So their own time wasting would have helped them.

Re: ⚽ West Ham v AZ Alkmaar - Official Match Thread
Generally the ref will add on 30 seconds per substitution. There were four last night and that accounts for the two minutes of overtime. Just surprised that the officials did not see anything to increase that figure.

Pedro 11:15 Fri May 12
Re: ⚽ West Ham v AZ Alkmaar - Official Match Thread
Fraser not quite sure that works.

It did benefit them because of lack of time ball is in play.

Maybe he only have two minutes because he didn't want their time wasting to benefit them.
